Neighbors agree to monitor alleys and roadways.

An Opportunity to Recycle
(NEW)
PAPER: Sign up your business to have free collection on Thursdays. North Platte
City Government is participating and the schools are collecting with the
sponsorship of the Learn and Serve Grant. What will collected? All white office
paper and junk mail. Pastel paper. Magazines. Catalogues - call for details. All
items: Recycling vehicles located at: the Methodist Church, E and McDonald; Our
Redeemer Lutheran Church, East E; the Senior Center - 900 E. 10th Call KNPLCB for detailed
information.

Build North Platte Beautiful.
In this program developed by KNPLCB and the North Platte Code Enforcement, visits are made to the building site. Presentations and a packet of information is delivered to the contractor highlighting litter abatement and recycling information The program
is endorsed by the Lincoln County Builders' Association. Clean building sites are publicly recognized in the media and decals are given to the contractors to display on litter containers and vehicles. A clean builder of the year
is recognized and publicized in the media and at the Home Show.

Clean City Month
October 2001 - Needed businesses to display cleanup messages on their marquees. Groups to do volunteer trashwalks. Look for the Health Fair sponsored by Union Pacific and Great Plains Regional Medical Center. KNPLCB along with these sponsors will provide litter bags to the public at the Fair which promote and clean and safe Halloween.

Environmental Court
Judge Kent Turnbull agreed in 2000 to sentence young people with Community
Service hours to KNPLCB in the spring and summer. This provides 400 hours of
service work in City parks and for trash pickup. Adults sentenced are supervised
by Western Alternative Corrections.

George the Kangaroo Mascot
'George' the Keep North Platte Beautiful - Clean City Kangaroo mascot is
available to appear at community events for children. George's appearance for
children reinforces the litter cleanup message. Look for 'George' at school fun
nights, library Storytimes, and the NEBRASKAland Days Kiddy Parade. Call
534-8100 to schedule George's appearance at your event.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Events are scheduled in the spring and fall. Each event needs 45 volunteers
helpers. An average of 11 tons of material is collected at each event which is
co-sponsored by the City of North Platte, DEQ, and Lincoln County Weed control.
Look for a possible Electronic and computer collection in the fall of 2001.
Watch the website banner for date and time. Call KNPLCB for information about
materials collected.

Litter Free Events
(NEW)
Events or groups planning a large activity - may use the "Litter Free Event
Sign". Please call to discuss the availability of trash containers. Groups
should put 'Please do not litter' on promotional material handed out at the
event.

Mutt Mitts
(NEW)
This is a new program that will provide stations in our local parks with Mutt Mitts
free
to use to clean up after your pet to ensure a clean beautiful park.

Nebraskaland Days: Kids Fun Festival, Kiddy Parade, Cake-Bake
(June 2001)

George
appears at the Kiddy Parade sponsored by Chamber of Commerce Hostesses. KNPLCB
has a booth at the Kids Fun Festival sponsored by the
Early Childhood Coalition
1300 children participate in this event.
KNPLCB includes a parent-child fun
summer activity in the event books given to each parent.

New School Curriculum: K - Flower Power; Grade 1 - You Can Change! Grade 3 - Litter Linko; Grade 4 Wheel Into Recycling.
Plus we have the KAB "Waste In Place" curriculum. All of these ideas will state the Nebraska Standards for the teacher.

Pride Patrol Education Program

As part of the Learn and Serve program grade schools designate 'clean up'
weeks
for each class. Weekly, one class focuses on an environmental lesson, cleans a two block area, returns to class and discusses litter solutions. At the end of
the year the Mayor and City Officials award the schools with a 'Litter-Free'
Zone sign at an outdoor assembly. In the second year the State of Nebraska
awards a sign.

Read Great 'Litter'ature
Teachers from grade schools are presented a list of books
encouraging a clean
environment. The books are donated to the school with the agreement that the
students will perform a service toward cleaning the environment.

Rural Roadside Cleanup
With Lincoln County and the Department of Environmental Quality - funds are
available to organizations who will contract with KNPLCB to clean up a
designated county roadway. KNPLCB also provides bags. Groups who agree to
monitor an area throughou t the year will receive a bonus and have the road
designated with their name.

Trashwalks
Any group any time any trashed place. KNPLCB will provide
bags.
Accountability - 501c3
Litter Index; cost benefit analysis is done every June to rate our community on its cleanliness. Reports are also made quarterly to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. An annual report is available to the public in April.
